Silently she sleeps
In restful bliss
Along Lake Michigan’s shore
Dreaming of days past
Some happy others sad
When her family lived
A momma bear
Two playful cubs
Swimming
Shoreline in sight
A game of tag begins
Rush of water
Too tired
Too young
Sinking fast
Mother’s intuition
Followed by panic
No cubs near
She searches desperately
Gone from her sight for only a moment
Never to be seen breathing again
Her cries are now wind
Pitiful mournful
She lays along the shore
In eternal slumber
She waits for her island cubs
The promise of someday in her heart
